It’s that time of year: when I start getting many questions about portfolios for internships There is not a consistent cycle for applying for internships; by mid-January some firms are aware they will have internships –but many do not. Therefore students must be on the lookout for internship postings at their college career services office, at the various design organization sites (IIDA, ASID, AIA*, PAVE, NEWH etc). While many firms do not have posted internships yet, students can use the time in January and February for preparation of the elements of a portfolio.

* On occasion the AIA has interiors related internships posted, in addition many states have an AIA magazine that lists firms that employ interior designers. In addition many cities have a local business related paper that posts lists of interiors firms for example the Minneapolis St Paul Business Journal post a yearly list of interior design firms as well as architecture firms.
